Professor Rocca’s research activities have been dedicated to digital signal processing in television bandwidth compression, in emission tomography, in seismic data processing and in Synthetic Aperture Radar.
The research activities in seismics were dedicated to multichannel filtering, interpolation of faulted surfaces, migration in the frequency domain, Dip Move out processing, non linear deconvolution, offset and shot continuation, and to the use of drill bit noise for "while drilling" investigations.
The non seismic research activities have been dedicated to television bandwidth compression, where he first introduced and analysed the technique of motion compensation, to emission tomography and to Synthetic Aperture Radar where he first proposed the use of seismic migration for focusing and the use of twin satellites for SAR interferometry, a concept that was then exploited for the ERS1/2 TANDEM experiment of the European Space Agency.
He is currently working on SAR Permanent Scatterers for interferometry and studying future possible missions.. He visited the System Sciences Department at UCLA in 1967 - 68, and then the Department of Geophysics of Stanford University as Visiting Professor in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987/88. He was Department Chairman from 1975 to 1978 and was then elected in the Commissione d'Ateneo (University Board, 1980 - 1993).
He is a cofounder of two small technological companies, Telerilevamento Europa and Aresys, both spin-off companies of the Politecnico di Milano.

President of the Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale in Trieste (1982-1983).
Coordinator of the first EEC research program in Geosciences, and in the coordination Committee of the Geoscience II Program within the Program JOULE2.
Member of the Scientific Council of the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale - OGS, and of the Scientific Advisory Group for SAR of the European Space Agency.
Past President of the European Association of Exploration Geophysicists, Honorary Member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (1989) and of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (1998).
Honeywell International Award (HUSPI) 1979, Symposium Prize Paper Award at the IGARSS 1989, 1999, EUSAR 2004. Schlumberger Award of the EAGE for 1990, Italgas Award for Telecommunications 1995, Special Commendation Award of the SEG in 1998, Award for Technology of the Eduard Rhein Foundation in 1999 for the invention of motion compensation in video coding divided with Dr. L. Chiariglione (for the development of the MPEG2 standard).
Doctorate Honoris Causa in Geophysics from the Institut Polytechnique de Lorraine in 2001.
