Val is Research Fellow at the National Oceanography Centre,
Southampton, and a member of the Centre's Laboratory for Satellite
Oceanography, After her PhD on "Optical Remote Sensing of Oil in the
Marine Environment" she paricipated in the EU project COLORS (1997-2000),
evaluating optical algorithms developed by the consortium partners. Since
2000 she has worked primarily on education outreach, devloping the
award-winning Ocean Colour issue of the Oceans4schools web magazine in
2002.
As Deputy Science Coordinator for the Natural Environment Research
Council's Rapid Climate Change Programme, RAPID, she is responsible for
website development and on-line public outreach material. She is Project
Coordinator for EU-INTAS project MOPED (Monitoring of marine Oil Pollution
using EO Data), where she also leads the work on the development of
optical algorithms to detect surface and dispersed oil, and the
development of training material based on the project results.
Val lectures in remote sensing, global monitoring and radiative
transfer models at MSc level, and is Project Coordinator for the UNESCO
Bilko project, which has distributed software and hands-on training
material in coastal and marine remote sensing to over 600 organisations
and over 4000 individual users in more than 100 countries around the
world. As part of this work she maintains the Bilko website, develops and
reviews new training material in ocean remote sensing and provides advice
and support for organisers of training courses and workshops
world-wide. |
