Reprinted from the CENC Newsletter.

On October 20, 2003, the workshop for "The Dragon Project", a joint project of the Cinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the European Space Agnecy (ESA), was held at the China-Europe GNSS Technology Training and Cooperation Center of the National Remote Sensing Center of China. Thirty-four experts for participating organizations of ESA and China attended the workshop. This workshop indicated that the cooperation between MOST and ESA in the area of Earth observation has entered the implementation phase. The two sides defined the cooperation framework and named the joint project as "The Dragon Project". This project covers twelve themes including agricultural applications, flood monitoring, forestry mapping, crop monitroing, forest fires, marine research, topographics measurement, air pollution monitoring, ozone monitoring, ocean color research, and water resources. The last five themes are the new areas proposed by ESA.
