Abstract

The pilot Project PRIMI, promoted by the Italian space Agency in the field of oil spill monitoring, is developing a system that can use SAR and optical data, produced by several sensors, mainly ERS, ENVISAT and COSMO/SkyMed for slicks detection. It can ensure a frequent revisiting time for any Mediterranean area combined with a forecast capability of the detected spills. The system makes also available wind, wave and current information, together with the relevant data about the ships present on the satellite imagery to end users. Its architecture, performances and the operational activities, made for more than one year, are presented with some examples of the new features extracted by the data.
