Abstract
The distribution of internal waves in the China Seas has been studied by screening 421 SAR images and 363 SPOT images for sea surface signatures of internal waves. The occurrence of internal wave signatures is correlated with the phase of the spring-neap tidal cycle and with the time of the year which yields information on the stratification of the water column.

In particular, the statistical analysis of internal wave signatures in the South China Sea reveals that in the deep ocean area between the Luzon Strait and Dongsha island the density of internal wave signatures is very low, but is very high west of Dongsha island. This is interpreted as a result of the interaction of internal solitary waves generated in the Luzon Strait with the shallow bottom topography around the Dongsha island.
